Management of acute and stable ischaemic heart disease in pregnancy

Dr. Paul S. Gibson

University of Calgary

Cardiac disease is the leading cause of maternal mortality in developed countries, and pregnancy-associated myocardial infarction is an important and increasing cause of morbidity and mortality during pregnancy and the postpartum period. These very serious events appear to be more frequent in pregnancy and may be due to different mechanisms than in the non-pregnant population. The approach to the diagnosis and management of ischemic heart disease during gestation is variable and not always evidence-based. During this presentation the epidemiology and causes of pregnancy-associated MI will be reviewed, followed by a pragmatic approach to the diagnosis and management of ischemic heart disease in pregnancy.
